School grade (A=4 … F=0)

The published letter grade encoded A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 so it can sit in the long table; the letter itself is on the school record.

key school_grade_letter_index · unit index · higher is better · rated (peer and district percentiles)

This metric is not re-read cell by cell by the validation harness yet. It is written by the same loader as a checked metric from the same file family (see below), and its coverage is listed here; a component for it can be added in components.yaml.

Definition

The published letter grade encoded A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 so it can sit in the long table; the letter itself is on the school record.

  • The published letter grade stored as an index so it can be ranked: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Schools with an 'I' (incomplete) or no grade are not stored.

What is served

  • Years: 2018-19, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25
  • 2,302 school-year cells across 489 schools; 0 stored as suppressed (publisher withheld)
  • 2,121 cells carry a peer-group percentile (all-students rows of schools with a peer group)

What it cannot show

  • The index is ordinal, not interval: an A is not twice a C. Use it for ranking and for counts by letter, not for averages.
  • The letter is a policy instrument with consequences (turnaround, choice options), so the distribution is set by the state's cut points rather than by any natural scale.

Comparability across years

  • Letters were not issued in 2019-20. Districts could opt in to 2020-21 grades under the emergency order; 2021-22 returned to the regular grading cycle. 2022-23 grades were informational baselines under the new FAST scale.

How it was checked

Every served number runs through the four-check taxonomy described on the methodology page: (i) completeness, (ii) an exact re-read of the file by independent Python, (iii-b) a second publisher where one exists, (iv) recomputation of derived values.

In the ratings

Schools are ranked on this metric within their peer group (40 nearest schools on demographics and size, same level, sector and magnet status) and district-wide, with the rank inverted where lower is better so a high percentile always means a better outcome. See outliers and movers for this metric, and the ratings overview for how peer groups are built.
