Definition
The 'Mathematics Learning Gains' component of the school grade, as published (percent).
- The state's learning-gains component: the percent of students who made a learning gain on the subject test from the prior year, under the state's gain rules (moving up a level, maintaining level 5, or meeting within-level growth requirements). For FAST-to-FAST tests, maintaining level 3 or 4 also requires a higher scale score; some mathematics assessment transitions differ. The '_l25' variants select the lowest prior-year performers within each school and grade under the state's rules; the group can include proficient students and uses the same gain rules.

What is served
- Years: 2018-19, 2021-22, 2023-24, 2024-25
- 1,799 school-year cells across 480 schools; 0 stored as suppressed (publisher withheld)
- 1,657 cells carry a peer-group percentile (all-students rows of schools with a peer group)
What it cannot show
- Learning gains are a threshold-based accountability rule, not a value-added estimate. Maintaining level 5 can qualify; the lowest-quartile variant does not remove this mechanism by definition.
- The optional 2020-21 grades used gains from 2018-19 to 2020-21 because 2019-20 assessments were cancelled. The 2022-23 FAST baseline grades omitted learning-gains components.
Comparability across years
- Florida replaced the FSA with the FAST progress-monitoring assessments in 2022-23 and reset the achievement scales; 2022-23 is a new baseline and results before it are not on the same scale. No grades were issued for 2019-20. In 2020-21 districts could opt in to grades under Emergency Order 2021-EO-02; that exceptional year is excluded here.
- Gains for 2023-24 are the first under FAST.
How it was checked
Every served number runs through the four-check taxonomy described on the methodology page: (i) completeness, (ii) an exact re-read of the file by independent Python, (iii-b) a second publisher where one exists, (iv) recomputation of derived values.

In the ratings
Schools are ranked on this metric within their peer group (40 nearest schools on demographics and size, same level, sector and magnet status) and district-wide, with the rank inverted where lower is better so a high percentile always means a better outcome. See outliers and movers for this metric, and the ratings overview for how peer groups are built.
