Parents survey: teaching and learning
Mean favorable response share across the district's Teaching and Learning items: teachers' knowledge, motivation, feedback, homework, academic standards, getting a good education: agree on positive items, disagree on negative items; unknown answers remain nonfavorable. Uses only items asked in every survey year. Zero-total response distributions are missing.

Definition
Mean favorable response share across the district's Teaching and Learning items: teachers' knowledge, motivation, feedback, homework, academic standards, getting a good education: agree on positive items, disagree on negative items; unknown answers remain nonfavorable. Uses only items asked in every survey year. Zero-total response distributions are missing.
- School climate composites average favorable responses: agree for positive items and disagree for negative items. Unknown responses receive no favorable credit. Zero-total distributions are treated as missing. The workload item is explicitly matched across its rewording and assigned consistently to Teaching and Learning.
Derived metric: computed by climate_survey.ts from the parsed per-item survey tables and the item crosswalk (survey_items.csv), plus October membership in grades 4–12 for the students' response rate; the inputs have their own pages.

What is served
- Years: 2018-19, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25
- 2,700 school-year cells across 528 schools; 529 stored as suppressed (publisher withheld)
- 2,012 cells carry a peer-group percentile (all-students rows of schools with a peer group)
What it cannot show
- The staff series starts in 2019-20: the 2018-19 staff workbook publishes agreement and disagreement only, with no don't-know column, and the two sum to a median of 83%, so its disagreement column is not the later files' measure; it is fetched with provenance but not served (retired 2026-09-16).
- Response rates vary widely by school and respondent group; the district withholds a school with fewer than 10 responses (a composite also needs at least half of its core items). The number of responses is stored as the denominator; the response-rate metric is shown beside the scores.
- Charter participation is partial: among active regular schools with students in grades 4 and up, 76 of 130 charters had a 2024-25 student safety composite against 310 of 314 district-run schools (data/analysis/miami-survey-enrollment.json, coverage.students_universe).
- The composites average the district's own sections over items asked in every survey year; items added later (equity, social-emotional support, career readiness) are excluded so the series is comparable. Recommend and grade items changed response options between years (five options through 2023-24, three in 2024-25).
Comparability across years
- 2019-20 was surveyed before the March 2020 closures; 2020-21 was administered during remote and hybrid instruction, and the parent survey that year asked about devices and modality. 2021-22 workbooks publish only pivot tables; their records were read from the workbook's pivot cache.
How it was checked
Every served number runs through the four-check taxonomy described on the methodology page: (i) completeness, (ii) an exact re-read of the file by independent Python, (iii-b) a second publisher where one exists, (iv) recomputation of derived values.
| Years | Common cells | Matches | Mismatches | Suppressed | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2018-19, 2021-22, 2023-24 | 1,345 | 1,113 | 0 | 232 | PASS |

In the ratings
Schools are ranked on this metric within their peer group (40 nearest schools on demographics and size, same level, sector and magnet status) and district-wide, with the rank inverted where lower is better so a high percentile always means a better outcome. See outliers and movers for this metric, and the ratings overview for how peer groups are built.
